Cannons on Plymouth Barbican

Above photos of 3 old Iron cannons, they where sunk in the ground a long time ago and used as mooring post for ships to tie up to. Plymouth Barbican dates back many hundreds of years so I have no idea when the cannons where placed there. Any else know ?

Video of iron cannon balls

video test

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr9femRQkJk

Why do the objects look so different ?

The large round object, which is the complete cannon ball was found stuck to rocks, with kelp growing on it, the second black object with stones stuck to it has been deep under sand and pebbles or many years. This turned out to be the half a cannon ball. We hope to put a short video on youtube of then crud being knocked off the objects.

Mike and me with today's finds

Mike and me on my Mark 1 rigid raider, the best dive boat ever for the type of wrecks we look for.
Fab day, nice and sunny, vis about 3m. Both in our Xcel semi dry wet suits, in the water about a hour and a half. Both dived at the same time today and left the boat anchored up above the site all alone.(don't try this at home)
We we both found one heavy object each, and removed the crud once we got back to sure. Which is a good tip! as you will never get the black muck that comes off it, out of your boat. The object will now spend several years in fresh water and being treated.

I will post a short video of us knocking of the crud here soon. Enjoy and any feedback is welcome.

What we do

We go diving on a wreck site we have found after years of looking, today we found a lump of grud. The crud is formed by iron leaking out of a metal object and sticks every thing near it together.
When we get back to land we crack it open with a hammer and see what is in side.

Today it was a 8 pound cannon ball which had been on the sea bed a long long time.

No its not treasure, but we Keep The Faith, who knows maybe next time!!

Noah sick, so no diving today.

Check out this diving job I did this summer, changing out a ships prop. We had to take out the old one and replace the new one, all underwater. It really was keep the faith.

Ray commercial diving instructor at Fort Bovisands

There is a great new video of my Uncle Ray on the web,I will post a link to it soon and some photos of Ray Ives.

Going looking tomorrow , probably going to use the Silver Bullet which is a small rubber boat. And probably going to use Mikes 2.5 hp outboard.

Underwater visibility in Plymouth Sound
